This is Frederick Edwin Smith, the 1st Earl of Birkenhead, a Conservative politician who became the Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. He is known for his staunch opposition to Irish nationalism, his wit, and his great personal and political friendship with Winston Churchill. In a full mottled calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with some light marks and a little rubbing to the boards and spines.
Minor bumping to the spines and extremities, with a small amount of loss to the head of some spines. Joints are lightly cracked, a little heavier to Volume I, VI, XVII, XXI, XXIV, XXVIII, and XXX.
Spines are a little discoloured with some very light surface cracks. A small amount of loss of leather to the front joint of Volume I, to the head of the rear joint of Volume III, to the front joint of Volumes XII and XV.
Front hinge of Volume VIII is starting but firm. Front hinge of Volume XXX is a little strained. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Closed tear to the rear free endpaper of Volume VIII.
Pages are very lightly age-toned and clean with just a few light spots. Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear. Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy. Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones.Often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy. Some more serious faults as will. Be described in the condition report under'condition. Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair. As with good only above but with other faults.
